We want you to look and feel amazing in our jewelry, and help you keep it in great condition for its energy and vibration to last. Follow the tips below to keep your jewelry looking great and to increase its longevity.
Gold plating is a thin layer above a base metal, which makes pieces stronger and less likely to bend. Unfortunately, over time, the base metal will eventually come to the surface, causing the metal and the gold to discolor. This process breaks the gold down and requires proper polishing and maintenance to restore its shine.
CARE TIPS
- Always remove your jewelry before swimming, bathing, doing household chores, strenuous activities, exercising or using abrasive cleaners.
- Gold-plated jewelry should be wiped down with a damp cloth after use to remove smudges and stains. We recommended to do a more thorough cleaning after exposure to alcohol, acids and sulfur compounds that could potentially cause the metals to tarnish and change their color. Allow the pieces to briefly air-dry before storing.
- Avoid spraying plated pieces (or even solid gold pieces) directly with perfume. Depending on the perfume, the chemicals can create a reaction similar to oxidation (which can turn your gold black.)
- Remove lotions, make-up and soil from your hands before touching your gold-plated pieces, and avoid direct contact with beauty products such as perfume, essential oils, hairspray, lotions, body oils and other cosmetics while wearing your favorite jewelry.
- To keep your pieces from premature damage, be sure to remove your gold-plated jewelry when showering or swimming. Chlorine, salt water, and fresh water can damage precious metals by dulling or eroding them. Soapy water when bathing and showering can also leave a thin film, which makes the metal seem dull.
- Put on jewelry last – because of the chemicals present in perfume, hairspray, makeup, deodorants, and other beauty products, a golden rule is to make gold-plated jewelry the last thing you put on, and the first thing you take off.
- When your jewelry is not is use, we recommend storing it inside the cotton bag provided with each purchase.
CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS
- We recommend using a mild soapy water solution, and a soft bristled brush (such as toothbrush). Rinse clean and pat dry with a soft cloth.
- Do not clean your jewelry daily as it can cause the gold plating to wear off faster, and eventually tarnish in a short time.
- To soak your jewelry, place the jewelry in the cleaning solution and soak for 5 minutes or longer. (1 cup of warm water, 1 cup of cold water, and 1 – 2 squirts of dishwashing liquid in a small bowl – do not use an antibacterial soap, as the chemical might tarnish gold-plating.) Clean only 1 – 2 pieces at a time to prevent the pieces from scratching.
- Tackling embedded soil – for pieces that are intricately carved, we recommend using a cotton swab to remove any soil from small crevices and corners. Never use a sharp tool (like a knife or paper clip) to remove the dirt because they can scratch away the gold plating.
- Rinse, Dry and Buff – when the piece is clean, rinse the jewelry in warm water. Do not use a paper towel or tissue as these can scratch gold. Dry with a soft, lint-free cloth and buff gently to return the shine. Et voila! Enjoy your sparkly clean jewelry piece!
- What not to use – do not use metallic brushes, corrosive cleaning solutions (such bleach and chlorine), or paper towels and tissues.
STORING YOUR JEWELRY
- Avoid keeping multiple pieces together – store your jewelry separately from each other to minimize scratching and tangling.
- If you want to take the ultimate care of your jewelry, store in a dark, cool, and dry place to avoid humidity and heat. Airtight plastic zip-lock bags could be useful.
